It all adds up….

Representation of a number in physical form

This article from Teaching Scotland reports on developments by the Angus Numeracy Hub to improve attainment in numeracy:

This approach is based on lots of the same research as the Highland Numeracy Progression and links to the same key concepts at its core:

  • Use of visual representations to develop conceptual understanding
  • Importance of developing number sense
  • Depth of understanding, rather than rules and processes
  • Use of diagnostic assessments to identify and plan next steps for learning
  • Identifying gaps and misconceptions in knowledge
  • Active discussion and questioning allowing children to learn from each other

It’s fantastic to see how this approach has helped practitioners across primary and secondary develop their teaching, as well as effective ways of involving parents!
