Building Better Basics:

The session below explores the importance of building strong foundations and encourages people to think about what their starting point is when trying to get pupils to learn their ‘basic facts’.  Often pupils are found to have difficulty recalling their basic facts and the presentation proposes that this is often due to pupils being encouraged to learn/memorise them in quite abstract ways, e.g. card games, before they’ve really had a chance to properly understand the operations themselves, relations between different operations and different numbers as well as the underlying mathematical properties.
